When to start doing things and stop learning

We keep waiting and learning about the things that we need to do. It seems like we are learning but not getting ready to do it. Is it just an excuse to not do things or are we not sure about our dreams?

Expanded perspective

We all have dreams and some awesome and crazy things that we want to do in life. We love exploring about it more and more, up to a point where we become an expert in it. The knowledge is there, but we have not yet started working towards that dream. We are seeking inspiration and trying to find everything we can about that particular topic. The learning is going on and on and it seems we are not even close to ready to get started.

How much to learn

Learning is a long process with no end. You can keep learning about anything as much as you want and you will still have so much to learn.

Let’s say you want to build your own website to showcase your financial skills, but you can’t because you don’t know to code. That means your learning direction is wrong, you don’t have to learn to code, you have to learn to build a website. If you learn enough about it, you can build a website without coding. There are a lot of tools and services out there that can help you do that. We want to do things the way experts do it, but do we really need to be an expert in everything.

You need to know enough about a tool so that you can build a website. You don’t have to be a website making expert to showcase your financial skills. Focus on your core skills and know the other required things enough to get things done. Someone hiring you for financial advice will not judge you for your coding skills.

What if you are not ready?

You will not know whether you are ready or not until you do it. If you are just learning and waiting to become an expert, someone with less knowledge and more work will leave you behind. It takes time to create a masterpiece and it takes a lot of attempts to create one. People know Leonardo da Vinci for Mona Lisa, but it was not the only painting he made.

The first step is always amateur

When you are starting, it is the best time to make mistakes. People don’t know you for the work you just started. Even if you fail and this ambitious project never gets recognition, nothing matters as not enough people know about it.

Try out what you know

There is no right time to start, you can start when you want to start. You need to know enough that you can explain it to someone. Once you can explain it, you can work on it. As you start working on it, you will know what else you have to learn. Working on things is the best way to find a direction to learn. Knowledge can only enable you to do things but cannot do things for you. In order to make progress you will have to act.

This is nicely summed up in one of the recent post by Gary Vaynerchuk

You can’t read about pushups. What makes you think reading inspirational quotes all day is gonna get you “there”.

Conclusion

Don’t wait, this is the right time, right moment to get going. Start doing the things that you always wanted to do and don’t shy away from applying what you have learnt.

Big dreams are not achieved by thinking big about them, but by making progress even if it’s small.
